MACAU (AP) — Manny Pacquiao got the big knockdowns he desperately craved, battering Chris Algieri around the ring Sunday on his way to a decision win in a lopsided welterweight title fight.

Pacquiao chased Algieri from the opening bell, knocking him down repeatedly and dominating from the opening bell. About the only thing Pacquiao didn't get was his first knockout in five years, settling instead for a lopsided 12-round decision against an opponent who seemed unwilling to engage.
By the time it was over, Algieri had gone down six times. And Pacquiao had a signature win that should put to rest the idea he's declining and maybe even set up a fight next year with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Congratulations Manny!

Chris Algieri wasn't much of a threat to Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao dominated, knocking Algieri down six times en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Real thing next time

MANILA, Philippines – Toni Gonzaga and Paul Soriano have been together for seven years now. From the looks of it and going by their sound bites from various interviews, it’s safe to deduce that it’s just a matter of time and timing for their love story to finally end up at the altar. In the meantime, the good-looking couple is having “practice,” as they are game enough to star in their first commercial together that seems to hitch on the celebrity engagement bandwagon.

In the new TV commercial for Acer that premiered last night on ABS-CBN, the TV host/actress is seen expressing surprise then happiness as the director drops to his knees, offering not a ring (at least not yet!) but an Acer laptop and smartphone. (The TVC is for the electronics brand’s #MerryMe holiday promo that offers a free Acer Liquid Z200 smartphone for every purchase of any eligible Windows 8-based, Intel Core-powered Acer laptop.) It’s a cute concept that is sure to fan the hopes of their followers and multiply the “When are you getting married?” question that has hounded the two since they became an item.
The STAR had an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Acer commercial and they were obviously having fun just being themselves — no acting required.
“It’s a different experience,” Toni told The STAR, “when I see him on sets like this, he’s usually behind the cameras.”
Paul on proposing to Toni for real: It’s something important and I know we will be getting there. It’s definitely the next step.                                                                                              Photos by VER PAULINO
Direk Paul added, “When I come to a set, it’s to visit her, bring her some food or say hello. So, this is fun! It’s a little bit different obviously but I feel like I’m at home because the production designer, the set director, I’ve also worked with them. I’m enjoying myself right now, and I know Toni is enjoying herself also. It’s always fun to do things together.”
Paul did a cameo in Toni’s hit romantic comedy, Starting Over Again, and with his movie-star looks, can do more. And while there had been offers in the past for them to appear together in commercials, the Acer TVC is the first to materialize and the sweethearts share equal screen time (if not more for Paul) in it. “I did take up acting in college,” admitted Paul, grandson of the acting legend Nestor de Villa. “Once in a while, it reminds you how hard it is to be an actor. Sometimes, as a director, you lose that because you just expect so much. But to feel that, even if it’s just one percent of what real actors go through, at least you know what it feels to be in front of the camera.”
Paul also didn’t need much convincing from Toni, a long-time endorser of Acer, to do the TVC. According to Toni, “(Paul is) not hard to convince. Every time I would ask something from him, he would ask back, ‘Do you want me to do that?’ He’s always like that. I’d say, ‘Paul, they’re asking if you can do this with me,’ and he’d say, ‘Do you want me to do it?’ ‘Sana.’ ‘OK, we’ll do it.’ But if I say, no don’t do it, he’ll say, OK, let’s not.”
“Toni is also my manager,” Paul added with a laugh, “at the end of the day, if she’s happy, I’m happy.”
Still, Toni had to clear the concept with Paul. “I asked him in the beginning, that the concept is something like this, which might give a different impression on the audience. Then he said, it’s just a commercial...”
“I think it’s good practice (for an actual proposal)!” Paul mused. “At least, I know what to do, I have a little bit of a workshop.”
When told that this writer initially entertained the thought that the TVC shoot could be a ruse for a real-life wedding proposal (anything can happen anywhere for showbiz folks these days — on national TV, at a mall complex, at an airport), the two laughed, with Toni explaining, “No, you know why, I think because he already said, if ever he’s gonna propose, it’s gonna be private not public. Me, also, given the chance, I would want it to be private. Something intimate, with the family, and if ever I’ll share it, tapos na siya.”
You can expect Paul to treat it with the same keen eye and meticulous preparation he gives to his productions, one of which was last year’s multi-awarded Transit of which he was producer.
The filmmaker said, “In anything that you do that’s big and grand, you wanna prepare well for it. So, the proposal is definitely a turning point in my life and in her life, it’s definitely the next stop, and I wanna give it some thought and preparation and hopefully, it’s a surprise,” teasingly adding, “because it’s hard to surprise this girl here. Every little thing, she’s thinking, ‘Are you proposing? Are you proposing?’ Hahaha!”
With the comfortable and candid way they talk about the subject, and knowing that their respective families are supportive of the relationship, the proposal could just be a formality.
“Yes, but it’s definitely what I want to do also,” Paul stressed. “It’s something important and I know we will be getting there. And there’s never been any pressure at all.”
Toni isn’t feeling any pressure as well. “I was probably pressured during our first year together. Everyone was asking — when are you getting married, is he going to propose, are you engaged — sabi ko nga, bakit kaya ganun, kaka-yes ko lang kay Paul, marriage agad. Now, after seven years, parang wala na.”
Their relationship is deemed wholesome and ideal, embraced by fans, untainted so far by intrigue and rumors, but Toni said that “it’s a work in progress.”
“I guess I learn something from my parents that during their time, they grew up in an era when something’s broken, you don’t throw it away but you try to fix it. And when I asked (my mom) that I wanted to get into a relationship when I was 24 years old, because Paul is my first boyfriend (and) parang siya na talaga yung gusto ko i-welcome sa family ko, she said that if you want to get into this relationship make sure you will really commit to it. It’s not something like trial and error, you have to really think about it, pray and ask for God’s discernment and wisdom. So ayun tumagal naman ng seven years. (And I believe that) whatever it is that you would program your mind to, whatever it is that you believe in, it happens in your life.”
Paul, for his part, said that seven years is no joke and that to make their relationship work requires faith. “It’s just easily God centered, (I believe if) we both have great relationships with God, therefore we can have a good one together. My parents told me that when you do find that partner make sure she’s in love with God first, and I did find that in her. It’s great! It just totally worked out. And we communicate a lot; the technology helps it out. Seven years — it’s tough, it’s work. We find ways to make it work.”
Meanwhile, Toni just had a successful concert celebrating 15 years in showbiz and will soon renew her contract with ABS-CBN. New projects are in the offing like a movie and possibly, a teleserye. As for Paul, he’s doing post-production on his next film release Kid Kulafu, a biopic on Manny Pacquiao that tells, in particular, of Pacman’s tough childhood before he became the boxing hero that he is. “It’s a story of Manny Pacquiao’s childhood so it’s like the first 15 years of his life before the boxing. We’ve shot it already and we’re doing post-production in the US... It’s gonna premiere at an international festival. Buboy Villar plays Manny Pacquiao and he’s very good. Manny was very supportive in the research and development. He’s part of the project in terms of giving us permission to use his life.”
Paul has also jumpstarted a passion project. “A passion project of mine is about the ‘Open Door’ policy during pre-World War II when Pres. Quezon saved 1,300 Jews from the Holocaust. It’s a fantastic story. I do have a first draft. It’s something I’m also doing in the US, and my writer is from L.A. I’m really leaning towards making films nowadays. Of course, I still do advertising. I just like being behind the cameras.”
Will viewers see Paul directing Toni in a film soon?
Toni said that she hopes to do an indie for a change with Paul and essay a character that departs from her signature rom-com roles.
“Every time, I see his films or watch films with him or watch films he’d recommend, I get inspired to work on something different, out of the box... I always tell him my future dreams in acting. I want to do something inspirational with a redeeming factor, because some indie films are really dark...If ever Paul can find me a script that’s really inspiring and can touch a lot of viewers’ lives, I’d be very open to that.”
Paul said that he has some ideas. “Actually, a lot of people don’t know that my first film A Journey Home was with her (a Christian film in 2009)... I don’t want to say no to that (directing Toni in the future). Why not? I mean, we have the rest of our lives to do that.”

Tubbataha, Hamiguitan now Asean heritage parks

MANILA, Philippines - The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in Palawan and Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental have been added to the list of Southeast Asia’s most treasured parks, Environment Secretary Ramon Paje said yesterday.
He said environment ministers from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations approved the nomination of Tubbataha and Mt. Hamiguitan as the 34th and 35th ASEAN heritage parks, respectively during the 15th Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment held in October in Vientiane, Laos.
He said the government is delighted by the designation of the two nature parks, which brings to seven the total number of ASEAN heritage parks in the Philippines.
The five other ASEAN heritage parks in the country are the Mt. Apo Natural Park, Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park and Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park in Mindanao; the Mts. Iglit-Baco National Park in Occidental Mindoro, and the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve in Laguna.
“The designation of Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary as regional heritage parks is long overdue, both having been named earlier as UNESCO World Heritage sites,” Paje said.
“This latest recognition indicates that the natural characteristics of both Tubbataha park and Mt. Hamiguitan sanctuary are so exceptional they deserve to be protected for the benefit of everyone in Southeast Asia,” he added.

Ara Mina Denies Cristine Reyes' Pregnancy Last September 10

"Natatawa lang ako. Kasi siguro in-assume rin nilang buntis din si Cristine kasi buntis ako, buntis ang sister ko," she said in an interview on Tuesday.

Ara is six months pregnant with her long-time partner Bulacan Mayor Patrick Meneses. This is her second pregnancy after having a miscarriage in December.

Though Cristine's pregnancy is not true, Ara told reporters that her younger sister already wants to have a child.

"Si Cristine naman, inaamin naman niyang gusto na rin niyang mag-baby. Very open naman siya do'n, pero sabi ko nga sa kanya, 'paunahin mo muna ko!'"

"So baka next year siya," she added, joking.

Ara also defended her sister, after the latter walked out in an event when she was asked about her rumored pregnancy.

"Siya talaga pag ayaw niya, ayaw niya," Ara said describing her sister's personality. "Sana maintindihan ng iba, 'yong iba naman kilala na ugali ni Cristine, e."

Now that Ara's expecting a baby girl, Patrick is very strict when it comes to her health.

"Nag-bed rest ako, hindi naman kailangan pero careful na si Patrick kasi ayaw na niyang maulit 'yong nangyari dati," she said. "So hindi ako masyado nagtatanggap ng guestings, 'di ako masyadong nag-work."

Although she's part of the TV5 musical series "Trenderas," where she portrays a mom to Lara Maigue, one of the lead stars.

"May cut off ako," she replied when asked if she has limitations when it comes to work. "Pero hindi na nga natutupad 'yong cut off kasi maaga pa nga sa cut off 'yong tapos ng taping ko. Tsaka very magaan ang trabaho, tsaka mommy lang naman ang role ko, mas marami silang eksena."

Joining Ara and Lara in the show are Isabelle de Leon, Katrina Velarde, Tina Paner, Dingdong Avenzado, Rez Cortez, Carl Guevarra, Edward Mendez, Kitkat, K Brosas, and Cacai Bautista.

"Trenderas" will start airing on Saturday, September 13, 9p.m..

Why Cristine Reyes Kept Pregnancy a Secret

Cristine Reyes finally broke her silence on why she decided to keep her pregnancy a secret.

Reyes admitted she is pregnant during her “ASAP” guesting earlier on Sunday.

In a live interview hours later on “The Buzz,” Reyes explained that she chose to wait because it was a delicate pregnancy.

“[Ngayon ko lang sinabi] kasi nandito na ako sa stage na sure na 100% na safe ako and my baby because 'yung first three months ko po na akala ng lahat nagtatago ako, critical 'yung stage ko. Advice ng doctor na kailangan bed rest kasi nagkaroon ako ng bleeding. Kailangan ko alagaan 'yung sarili ko. ['Yun ang dahilan] kung bakit hindi ako nagwo-work,” she said.

The 25-year-old actress said the pregnancy did not come as a surprise for her and her boyfriend because they actually planned it.

“Kaming dalawa ni Ali (her boyfriend) magkasama, nag-test kaming dalawa. We are happy kasi it was planned and it’s not a surprise. First test namin, morning 'yun. Akala namin negative pa so na-sad kami. Nung gabi nag-test ulit kami, positive na. After that, ang inuna namin 'yung family namin. They were happy and excited,” she said.

Now that the news is out in the open, is she worried that this might affect her career?

“Yes but confident naman ako na kahit anong mangyari, babalik at babalik ako. I know nandiyan ang ABS-CBN for me, hindi rin po ako papabayaan ng Viva,” she said.

“Sa akin kasi I’m happy and content na sa lahat ng nagawa ko, lahat ng na-achieve ko sa buhay ko and career ko so wala naman akong wino-worry,” she added.

Reyes said she and her partner are planning to tie the knot after she gives birth.

“[Nagme-marriage counseling na po kami] in preparation po for the marriage and para meron kaming heads up. Hindi lahat kailangan biglang ikakasal na agad. Kailangan meron kang knowledge about it, kailangan prepared,” she said.

Trillanes: Makati Science classrooms should not have cost P24.6M each

After conducting an ocular inspection of the Makati Science High School building on Saturday, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said the new classrooms were "good but ordinary" and should have cost less than what was paid.

Trillanes told reporters after the inspection that documents they received from the Makati City government indicated that each classroom is worth P24.6 million. But he said the cost for each room should have been much less.

"Sabi ko nga, kung extraordinarily impressive 'yung classrooms, it could justify the cost, pero based on what we saw, mas maganda siya compared sa mga ibang public high schools pero [the classrooms are] really ordinary...," he said.

When asked if the price of the building was justified, Trillanes said: "Definitely not, nakita naman natin na even the five-star hotels won't cost that much to build a room..."

However, he said the experts they brought with them during the inspection would give their advice at the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing on Tuesday.

For his part, Senator Koko Pimentel said that while he is satisfied with the construction of the building, there are some issues that needs to be addressed.

"Compared to the Makati Parking Building II, I'm satisfied with what I have seen, sa tingin ko – well, I am not an engineer, am a lawyer – mukha namang matibay... 'yung staircases mukhang safe para sa mga bata," he said.

"But there are some features like low ceiling at the dormitory room for the kids has a ceiling fan, so I pointed this out to the city administration," he added.

Less expensive?

For his part, Cuervo Valuers and Advisory Inc. president and CEO Federico Cuervo, an appraiser tapped by the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee, declined to immediately give an estimate of the cost of the construction. But he said the cost is "definitely much less" than the Makati Parking Building II.

"Since there is no river nearby, definitely the cost is going to be much less than the Makati Building II," he said. "Wala namang aircon ang mga kuwarto at ceramic tiles are not very expensive."

He also noted that the P24-million cost for the construction of the building is lower than the cost to build some private school classrooms, especially in schools like Ateneo de Manila in Quezon City or Xavier School in San Juan.

However, he said the amount is indeed higher than in "normal" public schools.

Cuervo stressed that he will present a report on the cost of the construction at a Senate blue ribbon subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.

For his part, Pimentel said officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Education, and some city officials were asked to also attend the subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.

Overpriced?

The MSHS inspection is part of the ongoing probe of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee into alleged corruption practices at the Makati City government when Vice President Jejomar Binay was the city mayor.

Lawyer Renato Bondal said the city government of Makati already shelled out P1.3333 billion out of the P1.5 billion for the 10-storey school building when based on the industry average price, it should only cost P470 million.

For his part, Pimentel said the cost could go up even more as the construction of the building is not yet done.

At the time of the inspection, only seven of the 10 floors are operational.

The first seven floors include a parking basement, faculty and admnistrative offices, classrooms, computer and speech laboratories, an audio-visual room, general science, chemistry and physics laboratories, and a canteen.

Located on the eight floor of the building, which is yet to be operational, are the 20 dormitories, which can be used by students who live far away. Each airconditioned room has six double-deck beds.

Meanwhile, an auditorium is being built at the 9th and 10th floors of the building.

Aside from the school building, among allegations of corruption hurled against VP Binay are the alleged overpricing of the Makati City Hall Building II, rigging bids and receiving kickbacks from the transactions the Makati city government entered into during his term as mayor.

The Vice President is also accused of owning — and not declaring — a sprawling property in Rosario, Batangas and a log cabin in Tagaytay Highlands.

Binay has repeatedly denied all the accusations saying these were all part of an operation to discredit him and diminish his chances of winning in the 2016 presidential elections.

Random Thought

How could there be people who are in the position but not doing what supposedly their functions are? If they can't do it, step down, give respect to others who most deseve it.

Only 2 out of 10 strongly agree that Aquino government isn’t corrupt- survey

Most important to Filipinos

FILIPINOS do not ask much from the government, results of EON’s Philippines Trust Index survey this year showed.
All they want is that their government “not be corrupt.”
Cora P. Guidote,SM Investment Corporation senior vice president for Investor Relations, one of the panelists in the presentation of EON PTI survey results last Monday, took note of that saying that normally, one says he wants an honest leader.
“The consciousness is about corruption,“Guidote said adding,” How can we aspire for an honest leader when we don’t even articulate what we want for a leader. “
An honest person is more than just not corrupt. It involves a higher sense of morality and integrity. One can be “not corrupt” but not totally an honest person.
For the Filipino people what they ask most from government officials is not to steal their money.
The sad thing about it is that “only less than 2 of 10 Filipinos ‘strongly agree’ that the government isn’t,” the survey showed.
EON’s 2014 PTI survey, conducted March and June this year, had 1,646 respondents nationwide both urban and rural areas.
EON, a business communications consultancy, had two sets of respondents: General Public(at least 18 years old, majority have not reached higher than 2nd year college, belong to Economic Class A to E, active use of different forms of media –broadcast, print, online) and Informed Public (adult Filipinos aged 25 years and above, with educational attainment of at least 3rd year college, belong to economic class A to C, and extensive access to print, online and broadcast media.)
This is the third PTI and is described by EON’s chairman and chief executive officer Junie del Mundo as “more robust as ever.”
It’s a deeper look into “an ever dynamic environment, where technology and changing social norms converge with our deep secret beliefs and traditions as a people, “ Del Mundo said.
It focused on six institutions: government, church, academe, media, business, and non-government organizations.
It is noteworthy that the Informed Public generally gave lower scores than the General Public.
2014 Philippine Trust Index
The government got the lowest trust rating (GP, 11 percent, IP 7 percent) with the Church as the most trusted (GP 75 percent, IP 66 percent).
Second most trusted is Academe (GP53, IP45 percent ); Media (GP 33, IP32 percent), Business (GP13, IP 10 percent) , and a little higher than the government is NGOs (GP12, IP9 percent).
In the government sector, the Office of the President suffered the biggest drop, 12 points among the GP (from 28 percent in the 2013 PTI to this year’s 16 percent) and nine percent among the IP (from 24 to 15 percent).
The Senate was pushed down to the least trusted among government agencies (GP, from 15 to 7 percent; IP from 13 to four percent).
The Senate shares the cellar with the House of Representatives (GP, 9 percent, IP six percent).
For the General Public, the Cabinet got the highest trust rating with 17 percent, down from last year’s 19 percent.
Could it be that the President’s practice of taking the bullet for members of his cabinet involved in controversies took its toll on the people’s trust on him?
For the Informed public, it’s the Local Government Units that are the most trusted.
While 40.3 percent of the General Public said the most important driver for them to trust the government is “not corrupt,” only 11.7 percent said “competent leaders.” The number said, “provides basic needs of the poor.”
There are more interesting aspects of EON’s PTI survey which we hope to discuss in future columns.
“The results show that trust is dynamic and that it can be built and eroded. It also highlighted that for Filipinos, trust can break communication barriers and is a tool that grounds relationships, which is why it will always be worthwhile to invest in building trust,” shared Malyn Molina, EON Assistant Vice President for Business Development and Strategic Planning

Drastic Plastic Surgery in South Korea Gets Tourists in Trouble with Airport Security

Several foreigners who specifically went to South Korea for plastic surgery have been held at the airport because they look very different from their passports photos!
We’ve got to hand it to the South Koreans for their excellent cosmetic surgery skills – just imagine changing a person’s face that skillfully.
Similar incidents have been reported over the past months, prompting clinic officials to begin issuing certifications to each client, stating that he/she has undergone plastic surgery to alter the appearance.
Airport officials are not happy about this, of course. This gives them added work because they had to thoroughly check whether a particular person is speaking the truth or was merely trying to cheat the security measures.
Here are some examples of drastic plastic surgeries in South Korea.

Old Lady Begging Blood Donation for Daughter with Leukemia – A Scammer?

lola
A frail old woman named Herminia Morales, 74, begs in the streets of Manila for people to donate blood for her daughter who is suffering from leukemia.
According to Social Trends PH, a concerned citizen posted on Facebook how she met the old lady at the 7-Eleven outlet in CEU Makati LV while dining with her best friend. They took pity on the old lady but could not donate blood, so they tried to give her money instead.

The woman would not accept the money, because she needed type “A” blood, not cash. The netizen thought this was honorable of the old lady, so she posted the story on Facebook, in hopes that someone could help.
According to the post, the daughter was suffering from leukemia and is confined at the Ospital ng Makati.

A SCAMMER?

A certain Abbie Santos, however, revealed that the old lady is not really someone who needed help but part of a syndicate who try to prey on innocent people by asking for blood donations.
Old Lady Begging Blood Donation for Daughter with Leukemia – A Scammer?
According to Abbie, she met the old lady in 2010 while she was out with friends along Megamall. They were told the same sob story, though the daughter was confined at the Ospital ng Pasig at the time. She needed 4 bags of blood. Though Abbie was with 3 other friends, she was the only one who believed the old lady’s story.
She tried to help, though she was puzzled why the old lady would decline suggestions that they go to the authorities (including the police station, Red Cross, GMA, ABS-CBN) for assistance. Still, she believed the old lady, so she went along.
Close to the spot where they were supposed to ride public transport to reach the hospital, Abbie said a guard from St. Francis quickly moved towards them. She was surprised to see the old lady hastily go away.
It was the guard who informed her that the lady was part of a syndicate that tries to lure gullible victims using the blood donation ruse. However, the helpful person would be kidnapped and, most likely, held for ransom.
Abbie shared her story to warn the others not to fall for the same scam.
If we choose to believe Abbie, then it is important to be wary of the old lady and not to fall for her sob story or something the syndicate would concoct just to lure the would-be victim to their trap!
