'Higad' attack in Davao

The home of the Remitar family of Sitio Fatima in Barangay Mandug, Davao City was almost overrun by hairy caterpillars orhigad.

On Monday night, family members observed that many hairy caterpillars were crawling into their home. They tried to smoke them out—but there was just too many of them. The family had no choice but to spend the night at their neighbor’s house.

Residents in the area said the creatures most likely came from the Langilan tree that was near the family’s home. They noted that most of the tree’s leaves had been consumed by the hairy caterpillars.

Experts from the Department of Agriculture said that the hairy caterpillars possibly just laid their eggs in the tree. They said the creatures were harmless.

One DA expert even held a hairy caterpillar and put it on his arm, saying he didn’t feel any itch whatsoever.

Nevertheless, the Remitars decided to use insecticide to get rid of the hairy caterpillars and stop more of them from creeping into their home.
