Fourteen years ago, reports surfaced alleging international
singer Mariah Carey calling Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez a “brown monkey”
during an interview with then MTV Vj Donita Rose.
According to rumours which initially circulated in
Singapore, Donita Rose asked the superstar to comment about the Filipina
singer. Reportedly, Mariah said: “A brown monkey who can sing!”
Mariah: A Victim of Racial Prejudice
During her early years, the pop diva experienced racial slur
in New York. Mariah disclosed she had been spat on by a white person when she
was younger, as reported by Yahoo Movies in 2013.
Donita’s Statement
Meanwhile, the then MTV host Donita Rose said her piece
shortly after the issue came out. In her statement, the model-host denied the
interview took place.
“The said article claims that international superstar Mariah
Carey made a derogatory remark when asked to comment on our own Regine
Velasquez during an interview I supposedly conducted for MTV Asia. This alleged
interview never took place except in the fertile minds of people who have not
bothered to check their facts and made me an unwitting party to a distressing
situation.”
She added: ”Not having been present during the said
‘interview’, I have no comments to make on what was or was not said by Ms.
Carey,”
Regine Velasquez Speaks up
Regine then broke her silence in one of the episodes of Bare
All with Boy Abunda.
“Parang weird naman na magcocomment siya nun eh hindi naman
niya ako kilala. Sino naman ako para suddenly mapansin ni Mariah. Alam ko
namang walang katotohanan yun otherwise nakita ko myself on TV.”
“Even if she did say
that, it would still be a compliment for me, ” she stressed.
